Here at The Natural Notebook Company, we are really excited to bring you news of our latest product – straw writing paper. Currently, no paper is made from straw in the UK other than the straw paper we offer within our Arts and Crafts artists’ range (or at least with such a high percentage). Unlike the current handmade artists’ range though, the brand new range will be fantastic for both writing and printing on. This very special paper is made from a paper pulp that is much closer to that produced in the paper industry as a whole. The fact that the paper is made with straw pulp as well as recycled paper pulp is what makes it truly unique.
Preserving traditional production methods
Despite paper’s long history stretching back over 2000 years, straw paper was first made as recently as 200 years ago in France and England – around the same time as the first machine was invented to make roll paper.
Our new range of straw paper is being produced using traditional production methods at the Two Rivers Paper Mill in Somerset – one of a handful of commercial hand mills still operating in Europe. The mill is using a 112 year old paper machine, on loan from Frogmore Mill in Hemel Hempstead. Frogmore is considered to be the world’s oldest mechanised paper mill and the birthplace of paper’s industrial revolution.
At the Natural Notebook Company, we continue to only use environmentally-friendly, traditional mechanised processes to minimise our carbon footprint. The straw we use is grown locally and would otherwise have been composted or burnt. No waste is produced as every part of the plant is used.
Choose your ideal weight and size
This fantastic new range will be available in A5, A4 and A3 sizes and with a choice of two different weights or thicknesses: 110gsm to write and print on and 200gsm that can also be used to create cards. For a truly personal touch, why not consider this for special occasions or weddings? These beautiful and highly tactile products are sure to quickly become a talking point.
The colour of the paper is a lovely warm cream and, whilst it is still possible to see part of the straw within the paper, it is perfect for printing and beautiful to write on. Due to the nature of their composition, each sheet will be different.
Both thicknesses of the new paper will be available as an option for our popular notebooks, sketchbooks, photo albums and scrapbooks, creating an almost 100% straw book (cover and paper) and a highly individual gift or keepsake.
When will it be available?
The new range of straw paper will be available to buy online in early March – so why not make a note to check back and be one of the first to sample this exciting and unique new range? While you wait, take a look at our current range of straw products here.
